This weekend I found out something awesome about ASU, they have a live and kicking Scuba club! Founded by Michael Thomas (Club Instructor and PADI ( https://www.padi.com )Master Scuba Diver Trainer) in 2006, this club is as flexible as it can be. They help you get your PADI certification. There is no membership fee and no requirements to check off, the only ask is that you show up. Here is a brief on how to go about the PADI certification.

The certification process is straight forward. Sign up for a pool session, conducted on Sundays at the ASU Tempe campus on request. This can take 4-5 hours. It includes detailed information on the suit and the gear, the best practices, and necessary skills underwater. This is followed by bookwork with videos and articles to read. That is close to 6-8 hours of work. That part is online or in person. You must then take a test on the course work. This is part one of the process.

Part two is the checkout dive. This can be taken at any of the upcoming dives on the calendar. The dives are always with a buddy so if you are anxious about being by yourself, that will not happen.  The cost for part one is 175$ as of now. Part two depends on where you choose to take the checkout dive. There are no monthly meetings for the club or any other obligations. There are dive trips to Lake Pleasant (local), to Rocky Point Mexico, Hawaii lined up for the first half of Spring session. It is all voluntary. The condos, travel expenses are all split with the members going for the trip. As I said, it is as flexible as it can be. As Michael says, it is a recreational adventure, so fun is a must! It is open for the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and their families and friends. Plus, they provide the gears!

Scuba diving is an adventure, a way to put yourself in a non-human environment and explore the magnificent life underwater. The certification is good for life, wherever you go. This lets you add a different element to your vacations.  Don’t forget to check out their website for more info: https://sites.google.com/a/asu.edu/devil-divers/home
