This is part of Das Tor’s ongoing series “Student Success Spotlights,” which features the hardworking staff on the Student Success Team at Thunderbird
I’m Janeth Hermosillo, a Student Admissions Specialist here at Thunderbird working within the Student Success team. I work within Admissions & Recruitment, which is a subunit of Student Success at large. Our mission is to be an integral part of the academic and professional experience for both incoming and current students. In addition to Recruitment & Admissions, the Student Success department includes our Career Management Services, Student Engagement, and Academic Advising teams. We believe in creating a streamlined process for incoming students to get the most out of their education and experiences here at Thunderbird. My background makes me uniquely suited for and passionate about this mission.
Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, I spent most of my upbringing here in Arizona with my family. Before coming to Thunderbird, I graduated from Arizona State University in 2018 after completing a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies with a concentration in South Korea and a minor in Japanese. During my time at ASU, I participated in two study abroad experiences: one in Hiroshima, Japan, and the other in Seoul, South Korea. Both were very defining experiences in my life that would affect my wants and needs in my future career and life.
After working at the job hiring website ZipRecruiter for eight months post-graduation, I realized my passions also lay within working in higher education; I craved to work within an international setting to further diversity within the workplace. Much like most Thunderbirds, with my background travelling the world and participating in new cultures and experiences, the Student Admissions role called to me and gave me many great opportunities to connect with students from all around the globe. Working at Thunderbird truly has been rewarding through and through. Students, staff, and faculty alike share a global mindset and are constantly learning from each other to be more mindful, progressive, and successful.
In my role, I don’t just assist prospective students submitting their applications and handle backend operations within a recruitment cycle. I also play a major role with current students. I supervise and lead our GROC (Global Recruitment Operations Center), comprised of current Thunderbirds. The students who work for the GROC are without a doubt crucial to our admissions process. They are our frontline communicators and work on various campaigns and projects for the Recruitment & Admissions team.
GROCers (pronounced gee-roc-ers) are the experts here, as they have also gone through the admissions process themselves; in addition, they have the ability to share their Thunderbird experience with interested potential students all around the globe. Leading the team has been one of my favorite aspects of my role, as I get to learn more and more about my students’ interests, customs, languages, and cultures. Since all of the GROC is diverse semester over semester, we all get the opportunity to work on intercultural communication and what works best for us as a team.
Within my department, Admissions & Recruitment works closely with incoming students to complete their application to be reviewed by our admissions committee. In addition to this, our Student Recruitment & Admissions staff (GROCers) assist us in connecting with incoming and current students for any inquiries and getting these students in contact with our graduate recruiters. Please do not hesitate to contact our team, especially if you’re unsure where to start. We would be happy to get you to the correct department for your needs, even if it does not fall within the department of Student Success.
